Beat the Heat: Cycling Hydration Tips for Summer Riding

As the temperatures climb, so does your body's demand for fluids and electrolytes. Whether you're tackling a two-hour gravel ride, climbing the trails at Sterling Forest, or putting in road miles through Bergen County, proper hydration is one of the easiest ways to improve performance, prevent cramps, and stay safe.

Many cyclists focus on calories but overlook what they're losing every time they sweat. Water is only part of the equation. Sweat also contains sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium—electrolytes your muscles rely on to function properly.

Don't Wait Until You're Thirsty

Thirst is a sign that you're already becoming dehydrated. Instead, start drinking early and continue sipping throughout your ride.

As a general guideline, most cyclists should aim to drink 16–28 ounces (500–800 ml) of fluid per hour, depending on the temperature, humidity, ride intensity, and how much they sweat.

If you're riding longer than an hour or in temperatures above 80°F, it's time to think beyond plain water.

Replace the Electrolytes You Lose

Electrolytes help regulate muscle contractions, nerve function, and hydration. Losing too many can lead to:

  • Muscle cramps

  • Fatigue

  • Headaches

  • Decreased power output

  • Difficulty recovering after your ride

Every rider sweats differently, so finding the right hydration strategy may take a little experimentation.
